the CLIKK Method for Cleaning Screens

Cleaning Computer Screens

Granted, we’re sensitive to this, but some of y’all’s computer screens are gross. Maybe you just don’t know a good way of cleaning them?

This method is quick, simple, safe, chemical-free, and really effective. All you need is hot water and two clean microfiber rags (see below).

cleaning computer screens tips

1️⃣ Turn Things Off. You’ll need to turn the display off, or its brightness all the way down, so you can see the screen itself. If it’s a laptop, it’d be safest to shut it all the way down (though that’s not needed if you follow directions closely).

2️⃣ Run the Tap Hot. Wet one of the rags and wring it out very hard, so that there’s no dripping whatsoever. It should be a hot, damp rag.

3️⃣ Carefully Wipe the Screen. Most dust, spots, and smudges will come off in one stroke. Then, use your fingers to get the edges and any trouble spots.

4️⃣ Follow Immediately with Dry Rag. There won’t be much water on the screen, but this soaks any of it up and prevents streaking.

This whole process takes literally one minute once you’re familiar. Still, in case you’re gunshy around sensitive electronics, a few details:

👉 We’ve used this method for years on a couple different screen types. This method works equally well for the glassy surface of a MacBook screen OR the semi-squishy surface of an LCD/LED monitor.

👉 You don’t need to apply much force at all. Years ago, we cleaned screens like they were eyeglasses (using the same little eyeglass cloth) and, while that works, it takes some time and a bit of force to do well. Not so with the CLIKK method.

👉 Screen-cleaning chemicals usually suck. The Office Depot wipes just spread the gunk around more evenly. Other things that seem like good ideas are actually terrible ideas; rubbing alcohol is great for streak-free windows, but it’ll f**k up a computer screen big time (by stripping off all of the delicate coatings).

Water is chemistry’s universal solvent, but it’s gentle. If you can sneeze onto your screen without causing permanent damage—which you can—you can also remove said sneeze safely using one of the same ingredients. 😉
